Make a match, make a friend

Big Brothers and Sisters of Yellowstone County is currently matching adult volunteers through the Lunch and Breakfast Buddies programs. The first five matches have been made; Bigs and Littles are meeting once a week for a meal and mentoring. Conversation and sharing interests will benefit both the children and adults, Several slots are still open for both lunch and breakfast time interaction.

The boy profiled below is typical of the nearly 40 boys, aged 6 through 14, who are ready to be matched through the community-based program. This program is different from the Buddies program; all interaction takes place in a community setting. Those in the Buddies program only meet during a pre-determined time at a pre-determined site.

For more information about community-based or site-based volunteer opportunities or to become involved in Bowl for Kids’ Sake (BBS’ major fundraiser), call 248-2229. Information is also available at http://members.tripod.com/~bbrosis/index.html, or by emailing bbrosis@wtp.net.

CARL is an active nine and a half year old who has not had a lot of positive male influence in his life. He sees his father only about once or twice a year; his one positive role model passed away earlier this year.

Carl, who appears shy at first, is very bright with many interests. He loves to ride his bike because it makes him feel “free.” The ideal volunteer will be between 25 and 40 with a good sense of humor. He should also like the out of doors and be very active. Carl wants to learn to snow ski. He would also like to go boating; he’s never been but is certain he would enjoy the experience.

School has become a problem for Carl. His teachers and his mom are certain he could do better, but motivation seems lacking. A Big Brother could help Carl tremendously in this area. And Carl is just beginning to think about girls; guy to guy discussions will be important very soon.
