Billings police officers voted in favor of a new contract this afternoon. The City Council must now approve the deal before it's official. The council will consider the contract Monday night.Union president Mike Gilluly said nearly all of the membership at the meeting voted in favor of the two-year contract, which calls for a 3 percent cost-of-living raise in the first year and a 2.9 percent COLA in the second year. There are other changes to the new contract as well, such as a change to how longevity pay is calculated, and new physical fitness testing procedures.

But the city and the union have yet to agree on a proposed change to the complaint process. Currently, officers with a complaint can file a grievance, but they can also file a human rights complaint or a lawsuit. The city wants to restrict complaint resolution to only the grievance process.
Both the council and the union are voting on the agreed-to parts of the contract, while putting aside the grievance issue until a later date. The city expects that the matter will be resolved in arbitration.
