Refuge schedules elk hunting season

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) – The National Elk Refuge has scheduled elk hunting through Dec. 10 to reduce the increasing number of elk that summer in Grand Teton National Park.

Drawings are scheduled for every Friday Oct. 13 through Dec. 1 at the Jackson Rodeo Grounds at 4:30 p.m. The hunt is scheduled to start Oct. 14.

Permits will be drawn for three hunting periods each week. This season, “any elk” permits will be issued only during the first week. Antlerless elk permits will be issued Oct. 21 through Dec. 10.

The season will end early if the management goals are achieved, said Barry Reiswig, manager of refuge.

Youths ages 12 to 17 will be given preference for permits for the first weekend hunt period, Oct. 14 to 15. All permit applicants must have a general or limited quota elk hunting license.

New this season, cow and calf licenses will be sold to holders of valid refuge permits that will allow hunters to shoot a second cow or calf elk.
