Bicyclists can enjoy park without cars Bicyclists now can tour Yellowstone National Park without having to face cars or entrance fees. The park will be limited to bicycle travel only until it opens to motor vehicles on April 16. This new way to experience Yellowstone has been approved by the National Park Service. The West Yellowstone Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a "Yellowstone Spring Cycling Tour Ì99" and will lead up to "The Lakeside Ride" on April 17. This 65-mile ride will begin at 9 a.m. at the Chamber of Commerce office in West Yellowstone and will take cyclists past Hebgen Lake and into the Madison River Earthquake Lake area. There will be breaks for photo opportunities, refreshments and a stop at the Earthquake Visitor Center for ranger explanations of the 1959 earthquake. The ride goes through the Nez Perce and Bannock Indian Trail areas and then into Idaho through Raynolds Pass to a spectacular view of HenryÌs Lake with the majestic Teton Range in the distance. Then it is back into Montana over a gentle climb to the Targhee Pass and downhill to West Yellowstone. Sag wagons will be provided with various recommended turnaround points for those who want a shortened, more leisurely tour. Cyclists should check remember to bring all-weather gear. A spaghetti feed, followed with the sharing of experiences, prizes and live entertainment at the West Yellowstone Conference Hotel will round out the day.
