BUTTE - NAIA passing leader Kasey Peters and the Rocky Mountain College offense enjoyed another big afternoon, but Montana Tech still escaped with a 24-14 Frontier Conference win over the Battlin' Bears on Saturday.
The Orediggers won for the fifth time in six games to improve to 6-3 in the conference and 6-4 overall. Rocky dropped to 1-8 and 2-8.
Tech, which led 21-7 at halftime, opened the game with a school-record 92-yard pass play between quarterback Matt Komac and receiver J.T. McIntyre. Komac also scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter shortly after the Orediggers had recovered a Bear fumble on the Rocky 11.
Skyler Knuchel crashed across the goal line from the 3-yard line in the second quarter to make it 21-7.
Rocky had the ball for 105 plays - 67 passes, 33 runs and five punts - and amassed 458 yards in total offense, including 361 yards worth of pass-and-catches between Peters and his corps of receivers. The Bears collected 25 first downs to eight by Montana Tech.
The Bears answered Tech's long TD pass in the first quarter with a 5-yard scoring strike from Peters to Brian Guisti. Rocky's Michael Thomas broke loose on a 48-yard scoring dash early in the third quarter.
Tech's Sean Kelly poked the final points of the game through with a 23-yard field goal later in the third.
Rocky's sophomore Levi Sutton caught eight passes for 114 yards, giving him a school-record 98 receptions this season. He has 1,127 yards in catches, which is also tops in the NAIA.
Teammate Guisti had 12 receptions for 94 yards. Thomas rushed for 64 yards on 13 carries.
Peters, a senior, has thrown for 3,836 yards this season. He has 27 TD passes and just six interceptions.
Rocky's defensive leaders against Tech included linebacker Steffan Blume with nine tackles and defensive back J.T. Fitzgerald with eight.
The Bears will close out its season on Saturday with a home game against Montana Western, which is 3-6 in league and overall.
No. 2 Carroll 26, Montana Western 10
At Dillon, the Saints clinched their 10th straight conference championship with their 10th straight victory of the season.
Carroll, 9-0 and 10-0, received a couple of touchdowns from Malta freshman Chance Demarais. He caught a 2-yard pass from Gary Wagner and also tallied on a 1-yard run.
Demarais rushed for a team-high 89 yards. Gabe Le gained 85 yards for Carroll on 22 hauls.
Wagner passed for 215 yards and three scores. Bubba Bartlett caught a pair of scoring passes for the victors.
Carroll will wrap up league play at Eastern Oregon University, 7-2 and 7-3, on Saturday.
No. 23 E. Oregon 37, MSU-Northern 20
At Havre, the Mountaineers rallied from a 20-0 deficit in beating the Lights. EOU outscored Northern 31-0 during the second half.
Quarterback Chris Ware led the way for the winners by throwing for 248 yards and three scores. Teammate Joel Haran rushed for 83 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
Northern's Jeff Van Nest passed to Matt Stuart for three first-half scores. Van Nest wound up being intercepted four times on the afternoon.
The Lights, 1-8 and 2-8, will play at Montana Tech Saturday.
