MISSOULA - WNBA, Olympic and NCAA basketball champion Sheryl Swoopes is scheduled to play in an exhibition game against the Montana Lady Griz next weekend, the university and Idol Sports and Entertainment announced Thursday.
Swoopes will play for Northwest Sports when the traveling team faces Montana at 2 p.m. on Nov. 8.
Swoopes last played at UM's Dahlberg Arena in the West Regional of the 1993 NCAA tournament, averaging 34.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in two games for Texas Tech, which went on to win the national championship.
Swoopes scored 33 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in an 87-67 win over USC, and two nights later had 36 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in a 79-54 regional championship game against Colorado.
Texas Tech went on to win the national title and Swoopes was named the 1993 Naismith player of the year.
"Sheryl is one of the premier players in women's basketball history," Lady Griz coach Robin Selvig said. "She was so much fun to watch.
"I think once they saw Sheryl play, our fans kind of identified with her the rest of her career," he said. "And I'm sure she has some pretty positive feelings about this place. Her team did pretty well here."
Swoopes went on to be a member of Olympic gold medal teams in 1996, 2000 and 2004 and led the Houston Comets to the WNBA's first four titles, starting in 1997. She was the WNBA MVP in 2000, 2002 and 2005. After 11 seasons with the Comets, Swoopes joined the Seattle Storm for the 2008 season. She still lives in Seattle.
