RICHMOND, Va. - The Indoor Football League has forced the Corpus Christi Hammerheads to forfeit their win over the Abilene Ruff Riders from June 20.
In that game, which the Hammerheads won 44-35 at the Central Pavilion Fairgrounds Arena, Corpus Christi lineman Eli Abraham was ejected. However, he returned to the field later in the game and walked onto the turf and knocked down an official.
In addition to the team's forfeit, Abraham received an indefinite suspension.
The league took away the win from the Hammerheads and gave them a loss, dropping their record from 6-7 to 5-8. However, the league didn't change Abilene's record. It remains at 6-6.
"(Abilene) didn't earn a win in that game, so we're not going to give them a win," IFL commissioner Tommy Benizio said.
The forfeit, combined with Corpus Christi's 82-75 loss to San Angelo on July 4, cost the Hammerheads a playoff berth.
San Angelo (5-8) now holds the tie-breaker over Corpus Christi, which means San Angelo will earn the Lone Star Division's third-place playoff berth regardless of the outcome of its regular season finale Saturday vs. El Paso.
After the game, the 34-year-old Abraham was arrested on suspicion of assault causing bodily injury, a misdemeanor charge. He bonded out on a $1,000 bond.
And that likely will end his IFL career.
"Essentially he received a lifetime suspension," Benizio said. "He was suspended indefinitely. We have an appeals process, so I guess you don't want to ever say never, but we have no intention of him ever playing in this league again."
