Can next weekend's all-class state volleyball tournament coexist with a college football game? For the first time since the tournament came to the Montana State University campus in Bozeman in 2003, we'll find out.

As third-place and championship matches are played at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse next Saturday, Nov. 14, the MSU Bobcats will host Sacramento State in a Big Sky Conference gridiron matchup at Bobcat Stadium.

This has raised some concerns for both the Montana High School Association and officials at MSU. Scott McDonald, the MHSA's volleyball director, said plans have been implemented for both events to coexist without any major issues.

"We've had numerous meetings with the people at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse to discuss how we're going to handle that Saturday, and so we think we have plans set in place to handle the situation as best as possible until we get there until we see how it's going to work," McDonald said. "But I think we're prepared well. I really think we've covered all the bases."

McDonald said the main concerns have been parking logistics for schools and fans, lodging and dining in Bozeman.

Fans are advised to park on the south side of Brick Breeden Fieldhouse as they normally would Thursday and Friday. Parking will be moved Saturday to the north side of the fieldhouse. Team drop-off will also move, switching from the northeast side of the fieldhouse Thursday and Friday to the north ticket gate come Saturday.

A shuttle system will also be used Saturday.

MSU Sports Information Director Bill Lamberty said he expects both events to run smoothly.

"The (football) game Saturday is being held when the tournament is kind of winding down," Lamberty said. "They go from having 64 teams on Thursday and I think they get down to 12 teams by Saturday.

"There's a little inconvenience but it'll work. (The fieldhouse) is a pretty versatile building for jamming a lot of stuff in to it at once. I think the facility is really a positive that way."

Class AA playoff tidbits

Three of the four AA playoff games will match teams that haven't played during the season, Glacier at Skyview, Bozeman at CMR and Big Sky at Helena Capital.

Not only that, but the Glacier-Skyview contest is the first meeting between the programs.

  • With Billings West's playoff streak ending at 13 in a row, Capital now has the longest streak of 11 straight. CMR and Big Sky are in for the eighth time in nine seasons.
  • The Bruins carry a Class AA-record 31 game winning streak into the postseason.

Wolf tops league's rushers

West's Shaun Wolf finished the regular season as the league's top rusher with 1,244 yards. Wolf carried a school-record 50 times for 203 yards in the Golden Bears' 28-20 victory over Senior. He averaged 124.4 yards a game.

Big Sky's Glen Maricelli finished with 1,187 yards and Bozeman's T.J. Leep had 1,182. Senior's Chad Newell was fourth (968) and Skyview's Carson Hilliard was seventh (882).

Sentinel's sophomore quarterback Riley King is the top passer at 243.6 per game. He completed 172 of 321 attempts for 2,436 yards and 23 touchdowns. He threw 20 interceptions.

CMR's Jake Bleskin was second (225.6) and Matt Berg of Butte was third (215.7.).

Bozeman's Tanner Roderick was the total offense leader at 274.7. King was second at 251.0 and Bleskin third at 246.8. Senior's Ben Sulser was eighth at 170.4 and Connor Lebsock of Skyview was ninth at 161.4.

Drew Owens of Big Sky and Ben Roberts of Sentinel lead the receivers each with 55 receptions.

Jordan Harper of CMR caught 53 balls and Capital's Josh Dirks grabbed 50. Danny Desin of Senior had 45 catches.

Ironically, Matt Miller, doesn't show up much in the stats, but his presence has been devastating for Capital opponents. The 6-foot-4 standout, considered the top recruit in the state, finished 10th in rushing with 799 yards.

But he only had 59 attempts and that translated into a whopping 13.5 yards per carry and he scored 12 touchdowns. Miller averaged 18.4 yards on 38 pass receptions and scored six times.
