Ten Sleep, which played with seven players and trailed 14-0 early on, led 40-35 heading at the end of the third quarter.

"We dug ourselves in a big hole and came back with a chance to win," said Ten Sleep coach Jake Zent. "I'm proud of our kids."

VOLLEYBALL

Class 4A

CASPER - There will be a new state champion in Class 4A.

There will also be a first-time winner.

Evanston took care of the former, and helped with the latter, when the Red Devils beat defending state champion Kelly Walsh in a five-game thriller at the Wyoming State High School Volleyball Championships on Friday at the Casper Events Center.

And Green River ensured the 4A ranks would crown a first-time champion with its five-game win over Natrona County in the other semifinal match.

"I don't know what to say," Evanston coach Tera Lawlar said. "Playing Cheyenne Central [in the first round] and Kelly Walsh it was such an unknown because we had never played them before.

"At least playing Green River we don't have to worry about the unknown."

The Red Devils and Wolves squared off four times this season, with each team winning twice. Green River beat Evanston in the championship match at the West Regionals last week.

"We just have to come out and play with the same emotion and be as consistent as we were [Friday]," Lawlar said.

For the Wolves, tonight's championship match has been years in the making for the team's seniors.

"This has been our dream for so long," Green River senior setter Sarah Pickle said. "We have worked so hard to get to this point."

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime happening," added Green River coach Rikki Shantz. "We have a blank [state-championship] board at our school and we want to fill up that board."

It's a board that either the Wolves or the Red Devils will begin to fill up tonight.

Class 3A

CASPER - Two years ago Powell was a newcomer to the Wyoming State High School Volleyball Championships. That inexperience played a big part in the Panthers' five-game loss to eventual champion Wheatland in the semifinals.

Last year a more-experienced Powell team won the school's first volleyball title in 21 years.

This year?

"Last year was great, but this year is even better," Powell senior hitter Hannah Pollart said after the Panthers swept Cody in the semifinals on Friday. "I think just being a senior makes this year better."

The Panthers were at their best in disposing of a young but talented Cody team.

Coach Cindi Smith knows it will take another solid effort to beat Wheatland, a 3-0 winner over Mountain View in the other semifinal match.

"It's good to get back [to the championship game]," Smith said. "I think it shows a lot of character on our part.

"[Tonight] we're just going to have to be aggressive and play our game."

The championship match offers some redemption for Wheatland, which saw its state title defense last year end in a tough, five-game loss to Kemmerer in the semifinals.

The Casper Events Center will also serve as a going-out party for Bulldog senior Paige Hellbaum, who turned down an offer to continue her volleyball career at Wyoming next year.

"I'm going to UW, but I'm just going to be a student," Hellbaum said. "It's awesome to be back in the championship, but it's hard knowing that it's my last competitive game.

"I think when it's over there will be a sense of completion."

With both the Bulldogs and Panthers having some of the best hitters in the 3A ranks, whether or not it ends in a state championship will likely be decided by the back-row play of each team.

"We'll have to pick up our defense if we want to beat Powell," Hellbaum said.

Wheatland coach Kim Davis has faith that behind Hellbaum the Bulldogs will do just that.

"Paige leads this team and I think she'll lead us in the right direction," Davis said.

Class 2A

CASPER - Big Horn is looking to end the decade the same way it started it - with a state volleyball championship.

Pine Bluffs is looking to return to the dominance it enjoyed back in the 1970's and 80's.

Either the Rams or the Hornets will get their answer tonight when they meet for the Class 2A Wyoming High School State Volleyball Championship.

"This team is young but we have great chemistry," Pine Bluffs coach Lisa Gilbert said after the Hornets beat Wright in four games. "I think we knew early in the year that we were going to be pretty good."

Gilbert was right.

Tonight she'll find out if that's enough to put an end to Big Horn's two-year title run.

Big Horn beat Pine Bluffs in four games to win last week's East Regional championship and claim the No. 1 seed.

"If we hope to beat [Big Horn] we're going to have to play aggressive and be smart with the ball," Gilbert said. "At the net we can't tip the ball ... we've just got to play our game and wear them down."

That strategy worked perfectly for the Hornets against Wright as Pine Bluffs dropped Game 2 and trailed 24-20 in Game 4 before rallying for the victory.

"We just kept competing," Gilbert said. "There are no individuals on this team and I think that played a big part in the win."

Gilbert and the Hornets are hoping that same chemistry will play the same role, with the same result, tonight.

Class 1A

CASPER - Tonight's Class 1A championship match will have a familiar feel to it, even if one of the primary names has changed.

Defending champion Cokeville and runner-up Burlington face off in the Wyoming State High School Volleyball Championships at the Casper Events Center for the second consecutive year.

And while Jerry Patrick is on the Burlington bench for his 19th season, Cokeville has a new look this year with longtime assistant Bill Thompson replacing Brian Toomer.

The results have been the same, however, as the Panthers and Huskies have occupied the top two spots in the 1A rankings all season.

In Friday's semifinals, both struggled at times before sweeping their way to the title match. Burlington beat Hulett and Cokeville took care of Kaycee.

"You know, I enjoy playing Cokeville," Patrick said. "I think both teams will show up and play well. It should be a good match."

Patrick wouldn't mind a repeat of last weekend's championship match in the West Regionals in which the Huskies beat the Panthers to claim the No. 1 seed.

Thompson, meanwhile, would just like to see a more-aggressive effort from his squad.

"We need to be more aggressive on both sides of the court," he said. "I think if we just stay level-headed and maintain our composure we'll be OK.

"We know [Burlington senior hitter] Paige Neves will get her kills, so we can't worry about that ... we've just got to take care of business on our side of the floor."

SWIMMING

Class 4A

GILLETTE -- Gillette advanced 19 individuals to today's finals and is in position to win its fifth straight Class 4A team title at the Wyoming State High School Swimming and Diving Championships.

Two teams appear as the likely challenges for the Camels today -- Cheyenne East advanced 11 individuals to the finals and Cheyenne Central 10.

Friday's highlight came from Gillette's Shaya Schaedler.

The sophomore broke Demerae Christianson's 10-year mark in the 200 individual medley by 0.35 seconds. Christianson went on to swim at Auburn.

Julie Schmitt led Kelly Walsh with the second-best time in the 50 freestyle.

Today's finals begin at 11 a.m. at the Campell County Aquatic Center.

Class 3A

GILLETTE - Jackson won its third straight Class 3A title at the Wyoming State High School Swimming Championships on Friday, winning nine events and finishing with an impressive 348 team points.

"Certainly after last year, we knew we had strong team chemistry," said Jackson coach Jim Jenkins. "We came together as a team and worked as a family."

That was the key, Jenkins said, of building the program in a town not known outside swimming circles for its prowess in the pool.

In addition to the team title, the Broncs also made a near sweep of the individual awards. Jenkins and assistant coach Patricia Pistono earned coach of the year honors, Emily Smith shared the Athlete of the Meet award with Rawlins' Jessi Anderson, and Mandy Wigg was named the Athlete of the Year.

"All of that is nice, but top to bottom, we had great swimmers and divers," Jenkins said.

The board was were Jackson took firm control on Friday.

Amanda Fay won the one-meter diving and led four Broncs in the top six.

Jackson added victories in the 200 medley (Wigg), 100 freestyle (Smith), 500 freestyle (Jaclyn Knori), 100 backstroke (Smith), and 100 breaststroke (Jesse Mayers). The Broncs also won the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.

"We really gained momentum as the meet went on," Jenkins said. "Win or lose, we were going to take care of ourselves. And we did that."

Anderson won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly for the Outlaws, and Lyman's Korrine Sorensen won the 50 freestyle.

Lander, which finished second, broke the 10-year-old 400 freestyle relay record held by Buffalo. Jamie Forton, Gwynaedd Howdyshell, Sammy Craford and Ruth O'Neal combined to complete their run in 3 minutes, 45.43 seconds.
