Ben Sulser said he was "a little messed up" on Billings Senior's final possession.

If he was, it certainly didn't show. The sophomore quarterback completed his final five passes - including a 16-yard touchdown strike to Chase Boyd with 37 seconds left - to give the Broncs a 32-30 upset of fourth-ranked Missoula Big Sky Friday night at Wendy's Field at Daylis Stadium.

The Broncs scored all of their points in the second in half in earning their first victory of the season and pulling off the biggest surprise of the Class AA football season.

Big Sky came in with a 4-1 record and put up some impressive numbers. The Eagles outgained Senior 495-350, but couldn't overcome six lost fumbles.

Even so, Big Sky held a 30-20 lead with less than four minutes to play. Sulser, however, scored on a 36-yard run to make it 30-26.

The Senior defense then forced a three-and-out and the Broncs took over on their own 27 with 2:13 remaining. Ten plays later, they had the lead.

"That last drive, my mind was messy, I'll tell you that right now,'' Sulser said. "We just dialed down, focused in and came out on top.''

Sulser, who had missed his first four passes on the drive, hit Desin with a crucial 11-yarder on a fourth-and-five from the Senior 46. Sulser hit Boyd for 11 yards and then Desin made a nice leaping catch for 13 more. On the next play, Boyd ran to the left corner of the end zone and managed to get his feet inbounds as he hauled in Sulser's pass.

"Coach (Steven) Falls Downs called the whole game great,'' Sulser said. "He called corner, and me and Chase Boyd looked at each other and we were like 'all right, here we go.' Chase made a great play in the end zone. Not many athletes can do that. I'm real proud of him.''

Sulser was also proud of the defense.

"It was all the D. They played tough," he said. "They let up 40 points every game (this season) because the offense couldn't stay on the field. That's totally a credit to the D. Definitely clutch … they played their hearts out tonight.''

Jon Hagstrom returned a fumble 85 yards for a touchdown to bring the Broncs within 17-12 late in the third quarter. Another fumble return of 32 yards by Greg Wyatt set up Sulser's 36-yard TD run that cut Big Sky's lead to 30-26.

Senior, which committed seven turnovers in its loss to Bozeman last week, lost a fumble and Sulser was picked off twice. But the Broncs kept the ball enough in the second half to roll up 253 yards.

Sulser finished 17 of 35 for 211 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 81 yards and two TDs. Desin caught 11 passes for 130 yards, including a 16-yarder for the Broncs' first TD early in the third quarter.

Big Sky's Glen Maricelli ran for 213 yards and three touchdowns. Drew Owens caught 10 passes for 203 yards, kicked a 35-yard field goal and had an interception. Eagles quarterback Eric Deneault completed 17 of 28 for 264 yards.

Big Sky jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first half and looked like they would hold on, even when the Senior offense got going in the second half. But the turnovers were too much to overcome.

Big Sky's two interceptions came on consecutive plays in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles lost the ball on fumbles after each one.

"I know this. We've played five games up until tonight and we haven't had a break all season," said Senior coach Mark Sulser. "We got 'em all in one game against a good football team tonight.

"I'm just so proud of guys, hanging in there, banging away. We played hard tonight and I think our guys are starting to learn if you play hard, good things will happen.''

"It's amazing,'' Desin added. "It really is. Nothing explains what I'm feeling right now. It was up-and-down. Our sideline really helped us out this game. We just overcame some adversity and really came through. It means we're on the uphill path right now. We're going to get better throughout the season.''
