Columbus grinds out 12-7 win over Malta

MALTA - Jayson Robbins rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown to help Columbus get past Malta 12-7 in the first round of the Class B football playoffs.

Robbins scored on an eight-yard run in the third quarter to give Columbus a 6-0 lead. A 14-yard scoring pass from Sam Faust to Tim Yeager pushed the Cougars lead to 12-0.

Robbins carried the ball 25 times for the Cougars, who churned out 324 yards in total offense. The Columbus defense limited the Mustangs to 143 yards in total offense.

Dane Stiles scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter for Malta.

The Cougars travel to Fairfield for a quarterfinal game next Saturday.

Fairfield 48, W. Point 0

FAIRFIELD - Chad Barrett rushed for two touchdowns and the defense produced to two touchdowns as Fairfield blanked Wolf Point 48-0 in the first round of the Class B playoffs.

The Eagles will host Columbus in the second round.

Barrett scored on runs of 4 and 15 yards in the first quarter. Fairfield quarterback Matt Patterson ran for one score and passed for another. The scoring was for 58 yards to Taylor Ratliff. Ratliff added a 16-yard touchdown run.

Clay Dennison blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for Fairfield, while Levi Cahoon returned a fumble for a score.

TOWNSEND - No. 4-ranked Townsend scored 21-second-quarter points and made them count in a 37-7 conquest over Colstrip Saturday in a first-round game of the state Class B football playoffs.

Townsend, 8-1, will play at No. 6 Missoula Loyola on Saturday.

Bulldogs' quarterback Taylor Long passed for two touchdowns and ran for another. He finished with 111 yard passing and 49 rushing.

Colstrip's lone score came on a 2-yard run by Caleb Nolte in the first quarter.

Baker 35, Three Forks 12

BAKER - Kodee Varner and Dalton Arnell accounted for two touchdowns each as Baker defeated Three Forks 35-12 Saturday in the first round of the Class B playoffs.

The Spartans play at top-ranked Huntley Project in the second round. The game will be at 1:30 p.m.

Baker rushed the ball 61 times for 398 yards and had 477 yards in total offense.

Varner, the Spartans quarterback, scored on a 5-yard run and added a 9-yard scoring pass to Bryan Overton in the first quarter. Arnell had scoring runs of 2 and 1 yards for Baker. Arnell finished with 95 yards on 19 carries, while Daniel Chester had 94 yards on 7 carries. Chester broke off a 78-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Bryce Kramlick added 88 yards rushing, while Overton had 62. Overton finished 6 of 8 pass for 79 yards.

The Baker defense forced five turnovers - three interceptions and two fumbles. Chester finished with a team-high tackles for the Spartans.

Three Forks rushed the ball 34 times for 236 yards. Clifton Stocker caught all three of the Wolves pass completions for 95 yards.

Glasgow 41, Choteau 8

GLASGOW - Kirk Capdeville led a strong ground attack, rushing for 102 yards on nine carries, and Dylan Hughes passed for two touchdowns and ran for one as eighth-ranked Glasgow defeated Choteau in a first-round playoff game.

Hughes threw TD passes of 12 and 30 yards to Drew Croy, and found paydirt on a 41-yard jaunt. Croy had six receptions for 80 yards.

"I felt like our kids came out and played probably the best first half of football we played all year long," said Glasgow coach Dan Dale. "We did everything right and our defense played solid the whole game."

"I am really proud of our kids and how hard we played. We've been fighting through flu and injury all week."

Tucker Hostein had TD runs of 12 and four yards for Glasgow.

The Scotties limited Choteau to 25 rushing yards.

Glasgow (7-2) will host Florence-Carlton (7-2) in the quarterfinal round next Saturday. Choteau returns home with a 5-4 record.

Missoula Loyola 28, Plains 7

MISSOULA - Sixth-ranked Missoula Loyola rushed for 235 yards and 21 unanswered second-half points to defeat No. 7 Plains-Hot Springs 28-7 in a first-round Class B football playoff game here.

Kevin Berland finished with 109 yards and one touchdown on the ground for the Rams, while Shiloh Kerr chipped in 89 and scored Loyola's final two touchdowns.

Quarterback Brandan Haggarty found Michael Kuntz on a 39-yard scoring toss in the second quarter for the Rams' only touchdown through the air. At the time, Kuntz's TD tied it 7-7.

The Savage-Horseman struck first when Cody Hoff dove into the end zone from two yards out in the first quarter, but it proved to be Plains-Hot Springs' only score of the day.

Loyola will host No. 4 Townsend in the second round next Saturday. The Bulldogs defeated the Rams 27-13 in Missoula Sept. 25.

EUREKA - Corbin Newbarry caught three touchdowns passes and also scored on a long run as No. 10 Florence-Carlton upended unranked Eureka 47-8 Saturday in the first round of the state Class B football playoffs.

Newbarry hauled in scoring strikes of 45, 24 and 24 yards from quarterback Spencer Burns. He also tallied on a 36-yard run.

Burns passed for 215 yards. Newbarry had four receptions for 100 yards and also rushed for 40 yards.
