Shodair Soccer Classic is Saturday

HELENA - The 10th annual Shodair Soccer Classic high school all-star event will be held Saturday at Nelson Stadium on the campus of Carroll College.

The girls game will start at 5 p.m. Saturday and the boys game will follow at 7 p.m.

Players selected for the game must have been selected as all-conference and all-state in Class AA or A and demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, and citizenship. New this is year is the Mountain Dew MVP Award, which will be presented to the most valuable player in each game.

Seven local players will play for the East boys squad - Ben King, Jack Pueringer and Ty Schmechel of Billings West, Levi Deeny of Billings Senior and Keith McGlothlin, Dalton Packard and Tony Bureau of Laurel.

Lexie Day of Laurel will play for the East girls team, which will be coached by Laurie Stergar of Billings Central and Megan Parish of Billings Senior.

The players will arrive in Helena on Wednesday to begin practices.

On Friday, the players will host a free clinic for children ages 3-12 beginning at 10 a.m. A banquet honoring the players, coaches, parents and sponsors will be held Friday evening at 6 p.m.

The soccer classic is a benefit for Shodair Children's Hospital and the important work it does for Montana's youth. Shodair provides comprehensive medical genetics services for people of all ages and psychiatric services for children and adolescents from communities throughout the state. Last year, the hospital provided more than $4 million in uncompensated care for at-risk children and youth.

Tickets will be on sale at the Nelson Stadium gate. Admission is $5 for adults; children under 10 free. Programs featuring player photos and information will be available for purchase.
