Two more spills reported at Yellowstone National Park YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) - Up to 1,000 gallons of sewage spilled at two campgrounds in Yellowstone National Park and shut down part of a campground for four hours. Park employees discovered the spills at Madison campground and near Mammoth on Thursday. Workers shut down part of Madison campground while they removed tree roots that had been blocking a 30-year-old sewage line. The blockage caused 500 to 1,000 gallons of partly treated sewage to spill onto the ground. Near Mammoth, small amounts of sewage had been spilling into a meadow for one to two months because of grease and tree roots clogging a line built in the 1930s, officials said. Park officials said none of the sewage reached any water sources. Both incidents have been reported to the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality. Four accidental spills have reported this year, the same number as last year. In late May, several thousand gallons of raw sewage spilled into a meadow between the Chittenden Bridge and Upper Falls. On July 2, staff replaced damaged pipe in the Canyon area that had broken in unstable ground. In addition, park officials have been spilling several million gallons of treated sewage into a meadow to prevent a sewage pond from overflowing. The park estimates it will cost $30 million to fix 142 sewage problems. Copyright 1999 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
