Yellowstone National Park silver dollar available
By The Associated Press
In an effort to raise money for the world's first national park and others, the U.S. Mint announced Thursday that the new Yellowstone National Park Commemorative Silver Dollar is now available for purchase.

As much as $5 million could be raised for Yellowstone and other parks through the sale of the 500,000 coins, said Sen. Craig Thomas, R-Wyo. The coin was authorized by Congress in 1996 in celebration of Yellowstone's 125th anniversary in 1997.

"The new coin unveiled today is more than just a way to mark a significant anniversary for the crown jewel of the National Park system," Thomas said. "Hopefully, with the help of collectors and park supporters around the country, we have created a new opportunity for Yellowstone to raise additional resources and contribute to the preservation of this special place."

The coins depict a Yellowstone geyser against the backdrop of the park's tree-lined landscape on one side and a bison on the plains with the sun rising above the mountains on the reverse side.

Most of the Yellowstone National Park is in northwest Wyoming. It also spills over into Idaho and Montana.

Thomas, as chairman of the Senate subcommittee on National Parks, pushed for creation of the coin to help raise additional money for national parks.

Half the money raised from the Yellowstone coins will go to Yellowstone and the rest to the National Park Foundation.

The park plans to use the money to make campgrounds accessible to handicapped visitors, improve heavily used hiking trails, better protect the Great Fountain Geyser, conduct wildlife research projects and excavate prehistoric sites.

The uncirculated coin can be bought now for $30, and the proof coin for $33. Both can be purchased as a set for $59.95. After Aug. 27, the coin prices will rise slightly - $32 for the uncirculated coin, $37 for the proof coin, and $64.95 for the set.

"We are honored to be part of a program promoting the conservation and preservation of our nation's most precious national treasures, the natural wonders and wilderness of Yellowstone and America's other national parks," said U.S. Mint Deputy Director John Mitchell.

Yellowstone National Park was created in 1872. The park is renowned for its geysers and scenic beauty. About 3 million people visit the park every year.
